Why You'll Love Turkey Avocado Sandwiches

This avocado turkey sandwich recipe is packed with flavor. Salty, crispy, rich, creamy, spicy, fresh - this sandwich checks all of the boxes.

It's one of our favorite easy recipes! The only cooking you need to do is fry the bacon and toast the bread in the pan. Everything else is prep and assembly.

Plus, it's our go-to sandwich to use leftover Thanksgiving turkey.

You can easily substitute where you'd like. Swap out the provolone for gouda, use any variety of bread, or try a different sauce in place of the chipotle sauce (roasted garlic aioli and ranch are great options).

You can also add whatever you like: red onion, sprouts, lettuce, and tomato are all welcome additions. Whether you make the sandwich as written or personalize it to your taste, I think you'll love this recipe!

    What You'll Need

The labeled ingredients for a turkey avocado sandwich sit on a white marble counter.

Two Cloves Kitchen, as an Amazon Affiliate, makes a small percentage from qualified sales made through affiliate links at no cost to you.

    • Two Pieces of Bread I like to use sourdough here, but use whatever bread you like. Just pick something sturdy enough to hold all of the ingredients, like a thick whole wheat bread, rye, or sliced Italian bread.
    • Deli Turkey You can use your favorite sliced turkey breast deli meat or, if it's near Thanksgiving, use some leftover turkey from the holiday. You can also use chicken instead of turkey if you'd like.
    • Fresh Avocado Adding sliced avocado to this sandwich brings a creamy richness to the dish. To pick a ripe avocado, ensure it has some give when you squeeze it, but that it is not soft. If you are planning to make your sandwich in a few days, pick a very firm avocado.
    • Provolone Cheese I love to use provolone for this sandwich, but you can also use another cheese that melts well, like gouda, swiss cheese, or mozzarella.
    • Mayonnaise Any brand will work here, or you can make your own homemade mayo.
    • Bacon Crispy bacon adds salty and crunchy flavor and texture to the sandwich.. Use your favorite brand. I personally love a thick-cut bacon but any variety would be excellent.
    • Salt and Pepper Optional. I find that the chipotle sauce and bacon provide enough seasoning for this sandwich, but feel free to add these if you'd like!
The ingredients to make Chipotle Southwest Sauce are shown on a white marble counter with labels.

    Ingredients for Chipotle Mayo

    • Mayo: You your favorite brand of mayonnaise for this recipe. A trick I love is to add about a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a brand like Hellman's or Best Foods to make it a little bit tangy. Brands like Duke's already have apple cider vinegar in their recipe.
    • Lime: Fresh lime juice is best for this recipe. You can also use bottled lime juice.
    • Cilantro: Fresh cilantro adds a lightness and freshness to the sauce.
    • Chipotle Powder: Chipotle chili powder adds smokiness and heat to the spread. If you can't find chipotle powder, you can use a bit of chili powder or cayenne.
    • Garlic Powder: Garlic powder adds a lovely savoriness to the sauce.
    • Mustard Powder: If you don't have any mustard powder, you can also use a tiny bit of Dijon mustard. You could also try honey mustard and omit the sugar below.
    • Brown Sugar: I like to use brown sugar rather than regular sugar because it contains molasses. If you don't have brown sugar available, add only a small amount of regular sugar in its place and taste for seasoning.
    • Kosher Salt: I recommend using kosher salt in all of my recipes. It is less salty by volume than table salt or sea salt, making it easier to season as you go.
    • Worcestershire Sauce: Worcestershire adds a wonderful depth to this sauce. It has a deep savoriness from anchovies, sweetness, and tanginess.

How to Make This Recipe for Turkey Avocado Sandwiches

Finished sauce is shown in a white bowl on a white marble counter top.

Step One: Prepare one batch of Chipotle Southwest Sauce. Put about 4 tablespoons in a container for use on the sandwich, and refrigerate the remaining sauce.

Check the recipe card below for ways to use your remaining sauce!

Bacon fries in a cast iron skillet.

Step Two: Cook the bacon over medium heat and set aside. Do not discard the bacon grease.

Mayonnaise is spread on the bread.

Step Three: Spread the mayo on one side of the top slice and the bottom slice of bread. Place the bread slices mayo side down in the pan with the bacon grease.

A slice of bread with cheese on top is shown toasting in a cast iron skillet.

Step Four: Once in the pan, spread chipotle sauce on the other side of the bread. Add the cheese on top and let melt.

Half of an avocado is shown thinly sliced in its skin.

Step Five: Once the cheese is melted and the bread is crisp, remove from the pan. Layer with turkey. Slice the avocado.

Thin slices of avocado are scooped out of their skin.

Step Six: Remove the avocado slices from the outer skin.

Avocado is added to the sandwich.

Step Seven: Add the avocado to the sandwich. If using salt and black pepper, I would add them at this step.

Bacon is added to the sandwich.

Step Eight: Layer the bacon on top of the creamy avocado slices.

The toasted turkey avocado sandwich is shown from above on a red background.

Step Nine: Place one more layer of turkey slices, and place the top slice of toasted bread with the melted cheese and chipotle sauce on top of the other ingredients and serve.

    Recommended Equipment

    Cutting Board

    Kitchen Knife

    Frying Pan

    Mixing Bowl

    Measuring Spoons

    Measuring Cups

    Spatula

Bread Knife - Optional. I like having a serrated knife to slice the sandwich into two pieces once it is ready to serve.

    Variations

Different Sauce: In place of chipotle sauce, you can try an aioli or dressing of your choice. I like this horseradish mayo.

Thanksgiving Leftovers: You can use leftover turkey from Thanksgiving for this sandwich. With a few simple ingredients, you can transform your roasted turkey into a delicious sandwich the next day.

No Bacon: If you are not using bacon, toast the bread with a bit of butter or olive oil instead. You can try making it a double turkey sandwich instead with lots of lean protein for a filling meal.

Cream Cheese: In place of chipotle sauce, try some cream cheese and chives for more of a bagel vibe.

    How to Store

Fridge: You can store this sandwich in an airtight container in the fridge for about 3 days.

Freezer: I do not recommend freezing this sandwich.

Reheating: My preferred method is to reheat on the stovetop. Add a little bit of olive oil or butter to the pan. This way you can reheat the sandwich and re-crisp the bread at the same time.

    FAQ

What can I put on a turkey sandwich besides mayo?

The chipotle sauce recommended in this recipe is a great option, but plenty of other sauces would work well. Ranch, aioli, different dressings (like Italian or Caesar), mustards, and cranberry sauce are all excellent.

What meats go well with avocado?

Turkey and avocado is a classic pairing, but it goes well with every protein I can think of - fish, beef, pork, chicken. All pair well with avocado.

What if I can't find avocado?

Your next best bet would be the find a relatively simple packaged guacamole.

My sandwich is falling apart. What do I do?

I like to cut the sandwich in half after it is assembled, then wrap each half in a paper towel to hold it together. If that isn't working, try mashing the avocado a bit so that the other ingredients don't slip.

    Expert Tips

    • To prevent browning, put a little bit of lemon or lime juice on your cut avocado. This will prevent the exterior from oxidizing.
    • Cut your avocado slices while they is still in the skin to cut down on mess. Scoop it out with a spoon for well-shaped slices.
    • Pick an avocado that is neither hard nor mushy. You want one that is somewhat soft, yielding to gentle pressure when squeezed.

    How to Serve

This ultimate turkey avocado sandwich is pretty filling on its own, but it's nice to serve with a side dish. Here are some ideas for how to fill out your lunch or dinner table:

Salads A side salad would be lovely. Try it with this delicious lemon herb vinaigrette.

You can also try this Thanksgiving fruit salad with warm apple pie spice, an orzo pesto salad, fresh, summery caprese salad with arugula, or this halloumi salad for an extra cheesy meal.

Soups Split your sandwich with a friend or family member and have a cup of soup, too. This chicken and cabbage soup, chicken pastina soup, or Greek chickpea soup would all be good.

Pickles Try these mixed pickles or some spicy pickled onions.

Looking for a tasty dessert? Try these Ovaltine cookies or this raspberry chantilly cake.
