Why You’ll Love This Recipe
My easy 4-ingredient guacamole has become a reader-favorite, so I decided to make another fun variation on classic guacamole!
With just a few ingredients and minimal prep time, this guacamole is so easy to make.
Because each ingredient is diced, you achieve a chunky texture. With vibrant ingredients like fresh lime juice, ripe summer tomatoes, and creamy avocado, this guacamole has all of the hallmarks of traditional guacamole but with the most inviting texture.
This is by far one of the best guacamole recipes I’ve ever made.
One of the things I love about it is its versatility. Pairing it with tortilla chips is always a solid choice but you can also eat it straight from the bowl, use it as a topping for tacos, add it to a breakfast burrito, or serve it with grilled chicken or any grilled meats of your choice!

- Avocados: I recommend choosing avocados labeled large or jumbo. I prefer using ripe Hass avocados when they're available, but any ripe avocado will work well.
- Tomatoes: I recommend using Roma tomatoes. Make sure to use a small dice rather than a rough chop here to keep the texture thick and chunky.
- Onions: White onions are often used in authentic Mexican guacamole recipes, making them a go-to choice for maintaining traditional flavor profiles. Red onions work as well.
- Lime Juice: I recommend using fresh lime juice. If you can't find fresh, you can find bottled lime juice in almost any grocery store.
- Jalapeños: Remove the seeds if you prefer a milder guacamole, or leave them if you want a spicier one.
- Cilantro: I love to add both the leaves and tender stems for extra flavor and to reduce food waste.
- Kosher Salt: I prefer using kosher salt because it's less salty by volume than table salt. It is also easier to pinch and sprinkle, providing more control over the amount of salt you use.
Recommended Equipment
How to Make Chunky Guacamole
Step One: Halve the avocados lengthwise, remove the pits, use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, and add the avocados to a mixing bowl.
Step Two: Combine diced fresh tomatoes, chopped cilantro, diced onion, lime juice, and diced jalapeno with avocado. Season with salt.
Step Three: Using your hand, a fork, or a spoon, roughly mash the avocado while gently incorporating the other ingredients to create a chunky texture.
Step Four: Adjust seasoning with lime juice and salt if needed. If you're craving a little extra spice, you can add more jalapeño. Serve right away.
Variations and Substitutions
- Green Onions: If you prefer a milder taste, use green onions or shallots instead of white onion.
- Lemon Juice: In place of lime juice, you can use lemon juice for a similar citrus flavor.
- Other Herbs: Some people are just not a fan of cilantro. For those folks, you can try using fresh parsley or basil in its place.
- Fresh Garlic Cloves: Adding a little bit of garlic complements the creamy avocado and balances the other ingredients nicely.
Storage and Reheating
Fridge: To keep your guacamole fresh, store it in an airtight container. Press a piece of plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole before sealing the container to minimize oxidation and prevent browning.
I also love to soak a paper towel with lime juice and gently pat it on top of the guacamole so that the entire surface is touching the paper towel. This has also proven to be really effective in slowing down the oxidation.
Freezer: To freeze guacamole, place it inside an airtight container or a freezer-safe zip-top bag. Press out as much air as possible to prevent freezer burn. It will last for about 3 to 4 months.
Reheating: This recipe is best enjoyed fresh so there's no reheating needed. For the best results, use it cold or at room temperature. If you have leftover guacamole, follow the storage tips above to maintain its quality.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
Look for avocados that are ripe but not overly soft. They should yield slightly to gentle pressure but not feel mushy. Hass avocados are a popular choice due to their creamy texture and rich flavor.
Yes, you can make guacamole in advance, but it’s best enjoyed fresh.
To prevent browning, brush lime or lemon juice over the cut avocado or mix in some sour cream to achieve the same effect.
How to Serve Chunky Guacamole
Guacamole is normally served with tortilla chips. Here are some other tasty ideas that are always a hit:
Try serving this homemade guacamole as topping for your beer-battered fish tacos, or as include it in carne asada breakfast burritos or a simple breakfast burrito filled with scrambled eggs, beans, cheese, and sausage or bacon.
For a filling and satisfying meal, serve chunky guacamole as a side or a condiment with blackened grilled steak or Filipino pork barbecue.
Or try it with your favorite chicken recipe, like this grilled chicken, jerk chicken, or a roasted half chicken!
For a vegan option, add guacamole to a burrito bowl filled with quinoa or rice, black beans, corn, avocado, and fresh veggies.

It would also be great to bring to a picnic, with other favorites like this BLT with chicken and some Mexican macaroni salad.
Expert Tips
- Add sour cream. I always add sour cream to my guacamole recipe to make it richer and add a subtle layer of flavor. I found that most restaurants use this trick because the acidity can act as a preservative, helping to keep the guacamole from browning as quickly.
- For the best flavor, use fresh ingredients. This includes ripe tomatoes, freshly chopped cilantro, and freshly squeezed lime juice. This will enhance the taste and overall quality of your guacamole.
- Add spice according to your tastes. Finely chopped jalapeños, serrano peppers, or other chili peppers are all great options for this recipe. Start with a small amount and taste as you go to control the level of spiciness.
