Why You’ll Love This Easy Guacamole Recipe
This simple 4-ingredient guacamole recipe is made with basic ingredients but packs incredible flavor. The trick here is using premade pico de gallo for an amazing shortcut!
The main ingredients in homemade guacamole (tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and jalapeño) are already in pico de gallo, so all you need to do is pick up a container at the store and pair it with creamy avocado, a little lime juice, and a pinch of salt for a delicious dip.
With fresh ingredients that are wonderfully balanced, this guac recipe is a great appetizer for a Mexican dinner or a great dip for a party!
But it's great with so many other dishes. You can eat guacamole with breakfast by adding it to a breakfast burrito, serve a dollop on a salad for lunch, or serve it with quesadillas for dinner.
Plus, it's quick to make! It takes only 5 minutes to make this easy recipe.

- Avocados: I recommend buying the avocados labeled either large or jumbo. I like to use ripe Hass avocados if they are available, but any reliable brand will work well.
- Pico de Gallo: This salsa contains all the ingredients you'd normally have in guacamole: roma tomatoes, cilantro, onion, and jalapeno, so it cuts your prep time in half!
- Lime Juice: I recommend using fresh lime juice. If you can't find fresh, you can find bottled lime juice in almost any grocery store.
- Kosher Salt: I like to use kosher salt for all of my savory cooking. It is less salty by volume than table salt or sea salt, which means it is easier to taste as you go.

How to Make This Recipe
Step One: To make guacamole, cut the avocados in half lengthwise and twist to reveal the pit.
Step Two: Remove the pit with a kitchen knife.
Step Three: Use a spoon to scoop the flesh of the avocado out of its skin and into a mixing bowl. Use a potato masher or a fork to mash the avocado to your desired consistency.
Step Four: Combine the pico de gallo with the avocados and mix until fully incorporated. Add the lime juice and salt, mixing to combine. Taste for seasoning and serve!
Variations and Substitutions
Smooth Guacamole: If you'd like your guacamole dip to be entirely smooth, try using a food processor instead of mashing by hand.
Fresh Garlic Cloves: Add some extra bite to your guacamole with a few minced garlic cloves.
Lemon Juice: If you are running low on fresh limes, try using lemon juice for a different citrus flavor.
Extra Fresh Herbs: Adding a bit of chopped fresh cilantro can add color and freshness to this dish.
Storage and Reheating
Fridge: Store leftover guacamole in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. You can also place a piece of plastic wrap over top of the guacamole.
The best way I have found to slow the oxidation process when storing (the process that causes the brown color in avocados) is to soak a paper towel with lime juice and gently pat it on the entire surface of the guacamole, ensuring it is all touching the paper towel.
Freezer: For the best results, place guacamole in a freezer-safe bag, remove as much air as possible, seal, and freeze. It will last for about 3 to 4 months.
Reheating: There is no need to reheat this recipe, but if you'd like to bring it to room temperature, feel free to leave it on the counter for about 20 to 30 minutes before serving.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)
To prevent browning, brush citrus juice on your cut avocado. This can be lime juice or lemon juice.
The easiest way to remove the pit of the avocado is to cut it in half lengthwise, then hold the avocado in one hand and a paring knife or kitchen knife in the other hand. Tap the knife gently into the pit so it sticks to the knife. Twist and remove the pit.
If you have leftover avocados that have already been cut, you can can them with a teaspoon or so of lime juice to prevent browning in the fridge. Use them within a day or so for sandwiches, salads, wraps, avocado toast, or as a snack!

Expert Tips
- Adding a bit of sour cream to this simple guacamole recipe will not only provide a creamy texture but will slow the browning process. It's the secret ingredient restaurants use for the best texture, flavor, and appearance!
- Place unripe avocados in a brown paper bag and leave them on your kitchen counter overnight to ripen them more quickly.
- To select ripe avocados, give them a gentle squeeze. They should have a bit of give but not be entirely soft. If you can only find hard avocados, you can let them ripen for a day or two at home.

- Mixing Bowl
Ingredients
- 2 large avocados about 3.5 cups
- 1 cup pico de gallo prepared, see note 1
- 2 tablespoons lime juice fresh
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt or to taste
Instructions
- To make guacamole, cut the avocados in half lengthwise and twist to reveal the pit.
